A digest is a fixed-length fingerprint: the same input always produces the same hash, and any change — even one byte — produces a completely different one. SHA-256 and up are suitable for integrity checking; SHA-1 is included for legacy comparison only and shouldn't be relied on for security; CRC32 is a fast non-cryptographic checksum for catching accidental corruption, not tampering.
